Work Report - March 2009

Groin again

March 26th 2009 08:28
Well, there hasn't been much to report on the prostate front for the last week or so. Things were presumably improving internally, but it's a bit hard to tell from the outside. (A prostate op feels like a bit of a fraud, since you don't have anything to show for it - in the way of scars and such.)
There was still quite a bit of pain when I went for a pee, but I presumed that was to be expected given the maltreatment the prostate had suffered, and the fact that the bladder muscles had to get themselves back together again after not being in use for eleven weeks - as it were. But at least I was peeing freely, and that was a major plus.
As well, I've been walking with great ease, increasingly by the day. (I've walked to work every day this week and last, for instance

Gathering dust

March 12th 2009 07:16
I happened to come across a site for incontinence products just now, which reminded me that one of the joys of my recent three or four months prostate-related matters was that twice we bought a pack of male
tranquility all through the night briefs
incontinence pads that I was going to wear in the daytime because, when I first got a urinary tract infection after my biopsy, there was a bit of a problem with not quite making it to the loo!
Fortunately this delightful interlude in my life didn't last long, and though I wore the pads for a few days, I soon found on one hand that the Oxybutynin tablets I was given relieved the tendency to go racing off the toilet at the drop of a hat, and on the other, the pads were so uncomfortable to wear on top of the catheter that it was better to risk a bit of a wet than drive myself crazy with additional pain from the extra pressure the pads caused.
When I finally had the operation incontinence pads turned up again, though wearing them in hospital in a hospital bed was a bit different from wearing them in normal life, and anyway they soaked up the excess bleeding that went on. But as soon as I got home I gave up on them. They're not comfortable, even without a catheter, and underwear does wash. So the second pack of pads are still sitting where they've been since December, and are likely to go on gathering dust

Update on the health

March 12th 2009 01:49
Things have been quiet on this front for the last week, because I'm doing a Varsity course (on Research Methods - it relates to the kind of work I do) and so my time has been a little more eaten up than usual.
I'm writing this post just to update things on the prostate front, (if that's not a pun), and partly to keep some kind of record of where things stand at present. I'm feeling very good; not entirely hale and hearty, but getting there. Still get tired, particularly towards the end of the working day, and most days so far haven't actually managed to make it right through the eight hours. However, I'm improving even on that score, and no doubt next week will be more able to work as normal.
Being able to walk normally is wonderful. I can't emphasize how much. The catheter was so inhibiting, I'm constantly rediscovering just how free I am without it. I haven't walked to work yet, but have walked halfway twice

Back to work

March 5th 2009 05:53
First day back at work today since the operation. I've been into the office a couple of times, very briefly, but today was meant to be pretty much a full day.
Well, by the time I'd had afternoon tea, I could hardly keep my eyes open! I should have taken advantage of the couch in one of the meeting rooms at work, and had a kip there, but I decided to go home, thinking I was washed out. In fact, by the time I'd had a ten-minute lie-down on my own bed, I was feeling quite reasonable again (!)
These sudden bouts of tiredness are fairly normal apparently, at this stage of recovery. We had a large family group around last night for a birthday party, and half way through dessert I was just wiped out. Had to go and lie down, and in fact, was so tired that I finished up going to bed at nine pm. On top of that I was feeling unusually sore around my stomach. It might have been that I unthinkingly lifted up one of my grandchildren. Probably not a good idea at this stage of the game! Faulty laptop memory in my computer brain, apparently

Recovery mode

March 3rd 2009 20:02
It's now nine days since my op, and I'm making progress. Gradually managing to get control back over going to the loo: until now I've mostly had to make a dash for the toilet because the bladder, having warned me it wanted to go, just couldn't wait. Partly the result of ten weeks of not having any control because of the catheter, but also par for the course after this kind of op, apparently.
And I hadn't been sleeping very well, because, not knowing whether you're suddenly going to get a call of nature in the wee small hours, you tend to be more restless. The first few nights I seemed to be up and down to the toilet like a yo yo. Last night was the best so far, with only one trip about 1.30 and another fairly early one about 5 or 6. And I think I probably could have put the second trip off for longer if I'd made up my mind (!)
Furthermore, last night we went to the movies, and I sat through the 100 minutes or so without qualm - even waited till I got home to go to the loo
