The Clowns of God

October 29th 2010 06:21
Morris West

I've read a few books by Morris West. Sometimes he's very good, other times I haven't been able to finish the book. However, The Clowns of God impressed me greatly when I read it - which is now many years ago. Here are some quotes from it.

Neil Gaiman and story

October 19th 2010 19:43
Here's a quote from Neil Gaiman, an author I both like immensely and dislike occasionally (!) - some of his fantasy stories are wonderful, and some are plain grim and gross ('gross' in the sense of 'yuck.') Anyway, I pinched this quote off Alan Jacobs' 'more than 95 theses' site:

William James as a young man

The older pedagogic method of learning things by rote, and reciting them parrot-like in the schoolroom, rested on the truth that a thing merely heard or read, and never verbally reproduced, contracts the weakest possible adhesion in the mind. Verbal recitation or reproduction is thus a highly important kind of reactive behaviour on our impressions; and it is to be feared that, in the reaction against the old parrot-recitations as the beginning and end of instruction, the extreme value of verbal recitation as an element of complete training may nowadays be too much forgotten

An obituary?

October 4th 2010 08:29
Continuing with the quotes and extracts I gathered in my old geocities site, here's an interesting one that was a news item originally:

Justice Young, reported in the Otago Daily Times, 8th Oct, 2003, in relation to a case where a family tried to overturn a will which had given Percy Wheatley's entire estate to the .Royal NZ Foundation for the Blind
