George Griffith quote

November 30th 2010 08:38
G J Griffiths reviewing Shere Hite's Women and Love, Otago Daily Times, 13th July, 1988.

The overall message is plain enough - that a great number of women (in America at least) have problems in finding love and sexual fulfilment with their men, and much of the reason is rightly attributed to a male lack of understanding

Quotes from Shostakovich

November 23rd 2010 08:32
The following quotes are all from Testimony - the Memoirs of Dmitri Shostakovich. At the time I read the book, I thought Shostakovich came across as a fairly wise character; later I was surprised to find that the book may have been a bit of a fake....consider this from Wikipedia, which discusses the issue:

Testimony is a book that was published in October 1979 by the Russian musicologist Solomon Volkov. He claimed that it was the memoirs of the composer Dmitri Shostakovich. From its
Dmitri Shostakovich
publication, its portrayal of the composer and his views was controversial: the Shostakovich of the book was sometimes critical of fellow composers, and most notably was strongly anti-Soviet in his views. The book also contained comments on his own music, indicating that it was intended as veiled criticism of the Soviet authorities and support for the dissident movement. The authenticity of the book is still disputed.

The first of these is from a book I can't even remember reading now - but it's a lovely piece of pscyho-speak:

It comes from Beyond Sex Roles - Gilbert Bilezikian, chapter two

More from my quotes collection

November 9th 2010 06:54
Even though my old geocities site is now available in at least two places on the Web, I'll continue posting the quotes I collected some years ago on here. It gives them a new lease of life, and reminds me why I enjoyed them in the first place.

The following was attributed to Abraham Lincoln on a TRIM poster. However,
william boetcker
the particular site no longer goes to the poster, or anything like it. That's what happens when a few years pass. In fact, Abraham didn't write these statements; they're now considered to be the work of one William Boetcker, a Presbyterian clergyman and pamphlet writer. You can find out more about William here
