Dale Carnegie quotes

October 30th 2011 23:58
Dale Carnegie

One of the ezines I get each week provided the following quotes from Dale Carnegie, whose book, How to Win Friends and Influence People is still a classic. Some people don't like his tone, but you have to admit he's right about much of what he says...and a lot of what he says comes straight from New Testament teaching, anyway!

Denis Glover

October 25th 2011 20:06
A quote on pre-war Auckland from Denis Glover, NZ poet - though not from one of his poems. I'm not sure if things have changed much.

If there is one extraordinary blot on the landscape of New Zealand, let me tell you
Denis Glover by Bensemann
it is Auckland: a vast collection of extinct volcanoes, in those days tastefully linked by tramlines. Auckland is a conglomerate of small villages sparwling over easy-sleazy country, each of them a terminus of ill-built shops, mostly the milk-bar variety, and always with some kind of poor-denomination church prominently facing a good highway, with exalting posters of the 'Come in and have your Faith lifted' type. Auckland in its conceit and its indolence is far worse than any other part of New Zelaand. Untypical, even when they speak English

Strange comparison

tintin
From an article in The Independent entitled Mad about the boy.

Responding to criticism of the new film [Tintin], Nick Rodwell, the head of Moulinsart, the company that controls the image and rights to all Tintin merchandise, said: "They have created their own interpretation, in the same way different theatre directors interpret Shakespeare. If this movie brings people back to the books so much the better. To be in a position to have Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg taking it on – it's good for Belgium and it's good for the work." He added that scholars went on to create the New Testament "because they weren't happy with the Old Testament

Two quotes relating to creativity

October 20th 2011 21:36
The following quote comes from Walking on Water by Madeleine L'Engle - chapter 8. L'Engle may be quoting Martin Luther.

The saints (and artists) are those who not only accept, but rejoice in the incongruity and so learn that laughter is holy. The infinite disparity between God's love and man's deserts is an indubitable fact; the saint embraces it for joy. The greater the incongruity, the more wonderful the love and mercy of God. The saint does not call himself a worm because he enjoys being wormy, but because there is simply no other way graphic enough to express the richness of God and the meagreness of men

Advertising

Democracy and the Student - George F Kennan (quoted in
george f kennan
Style: an Anti-Textbook, by Richard Lanham, pg 127).

After the needless destruction of natural environment, I regard this - not advertising as such, but the consignment to the advertiser of the entire mass communication process, as a concession to be exploited by it for commercial gain - as probably the greatest evil of our natural life. We will not, I think, have a healthy intellectual climate in this country, a successful system of education, a sound press, or a proper vitality of artistic and recreational life, until advertising is rigorously separated from every form of legitimate cultural and intellectual communication - until advertisements are removed from every printed page containing material that has claim to intellectual or artistic integrity and form every television or radio program that has those same pretensions, from every roadside and every bit of countryside that purports to offer to the traveller a glimpse of what his continent once was and once again might be
