All work on a play
September 22nd 2008 07:53
There hasn't been anything in here for virtually a fortnight, because I've been either rehearsing most nights for a play, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, or performing in it (as from last Wednesday).
The rehearsals were tough, especially in the latter stages, when we had one marathon seven-hour stint (during all of which time I was inside my Mouse costume, an all-encompassing thing with an obligatory tail). But once we got past the rehearsal period, and had pretty solved all of our problems with the slightly intractable set, we were on our way, and the performances have been good, and not plagued by anything except minor incidents.
There are times when I look at myself in one of the several mirrors around the backstage dressing rooms and think, 'a diet pill wouldn't go amiss' but then I remember that at least part of the 'weight' I'm carrying isn't my own: I have a large butt, which might look attractive on a mouse, but isn't too hot on me. Fortunately, as I say, it ain't my own, and I go home without it. What I don't go home without, however, is the leftovers of the make-up that's put on each night by one of the make-up ladies. Mine takes upwards of half-an-hour, hardly long by Hollywood standards, but certainly longer than anyone else's in the play. I wind up looking a dirty grey colour - again it might befit a mouse, but it ain't attractive on me. And the bath at home is frequently ringed by a greyish line.
Anyway, all that aside, the play is going well, and our only disappointment has been that the houses have been rather small - certainly by comparison with previous years, when most of the time we were almost full at each performance. There's a lot on in town, so that may contribute to the calls on the discretionary dollar, and the Dunedin Arts Festival is just around the corner too. On top of that, of course, petrol has been up in price for a while, and food prices are also up. Us poor players just have to take what we can get.

Yup, Bevetal, people have certainly enjoyed it: my grandson claimed it the 'coolest play he'd ever been too!'
