Mesothelioma
July 28th 2009 08:41
Since we've been talking about health a good deal on here lately, I may as well continue. The subject today, children, is malignant Mesothelioma. I've written about it before, on one of my other blogs, but I usually have to remind myself what it is.
It's the cancer caused by exposure to asbestos, and it affects the mesothelium, the membranes that lubricate certain parts of the body. It's not something you want to get: it can affect all sorts of vital areas, and lead to an unpleasant end. The most common form of the disease is pleural mesothelioma, which affects the lungs (think pleurisy, for instance), and next in line is the peritoneal version, which affects the lining of the abdomen.
It's not good, and of course it mostly comes to light quite a few years after the exposure to asbestos has happened. Asbestos was everywhere at one time; it was regarded as a solid kind of addition to roofing, for one thing. It was a cheap filler and was marketed as a fire resistant material.
At one time the asbestos industry claimed asbestos was some kind of “magic mineral.” It created a demand for the material, without advising of the dangers of exposure. Perhaps they weren't aware. The result, however, was that thousands of workers were infected by it, and many died.
You can read quite a bit about the subject here. It may be that the writers, having something of a vested interest in looking for cases to pursue, have overstated the issue. But probably not.
