A working face (LINK)

When I was involved in the production of the play, The Diary of Anne Frank, a couple of years ago, at least two of the actors had recently had small parts in a movie that was made locally. The film eventually came out with the rather innocuous title, Out of the Blue, because the makers weren’t allowed to use the word, Aramoana, in the title, Aramoana being the name of the coastal village near our city where more than a dozen people were gunned down in one day by a man who lost the plot and shot at everything that moved.

One of these actors was telling me at the time that he’d signed up with an agent, because he was interested in getting more film work, and I’ve just come across his photo, and that of two other people who in the play, on a site called Otago Actors and Talent Agency. I’m not sure if this is the ‘agent’ he was referring to. I rather think it’s more likely to be yet another way of getting his face seen.

All this by way of a long-winded introduction to another site, called Look of the Year.com. There’s a competition being held on this site for anyone who wants to enter – young or old,

good-looking or not. As they state, this is an online beauty contest for anybody – not just a chosen few, but everybody who wants to join. The judges, likewise, are who surfs onto LookOfTheYear.com and votes. The idea is that at the end of the contest you might wind up being a top model, as well as winning quite a bit of cash.

I don’t think I’ll be entering, tempting though it is! And when I look at the bunch of photos on the Otago Actors and Talent Agency, I don’t think many of them would stand much of a chance either. They’re an ordinary looking bunch, overall, though their looks belie their talent in every case. But what this says to me, I think, is that most people who appear in movies aren’t actually beautiful; the bunch of bodies who surround the stars are usually no better-looking than you or me!
