External Plumbing

Since I’m at home on holiday this week (and the next two) I can’t exactly write about work on this blog, so I’ll carry on with the other subject that’s taken up a good deal of space here recently.
Went to town on the bus around lunch time today and noticed when I got off the bus that my left foot seemed to be just a little damp – just below where the nozzle of the catheter bag comes out. Thought it might have been a bit of a drip and didn’t give it much attention, but while I was having lunch with a friend, I could feel my left foot getting more and more damp. Finally went off to the loo to check and found that the nozzle had definitely been leaking onto my foot.
Unfortunately I had to go and see someone else before I could go home and tidy things up, which meant dealing with a very wet sock on that side. I discovered later that the shunt wasn’t quite shutting: it needed an additional click to get it to close off completely, though it’s only been doing this today.
Ah the joys of catheters. This isn’t the first time one’s given me a sudden wet surprise!
I was lying in bed one night a couple of weeks ago and thought I’d wet myself – officially an impossibility with a catheter. Turned out the connection between the internal section and the bag’s linking section had come loose. And it did it a couple of times the next day, giving me a sudden sense of dampness while talking to someone.
The solution turned out to be to wrap the joint between the two sections with a good deal of Elastoplast. That seems to have done the trick since!
Another night the joint between the ordinary bag and the night bag wasn’t quite holding together. I leave the rest to your imagination.
It’ll be good to get back to only having to deal with plumbing on the inside of the body again!
I have been into work this week, even though I've been on holiday. First on Tuesday when I was going to change the backup drive, (these are solid enclosed drives, not tape drives) because no one else is in at the office this week - and they wouldn't think to do it anyway! Discovered, when I got there that I hadn't brought the replacement drive from home. Repeat trip on Wednesday. (Not just for this, mind you - I've had lunch with someone every day except Monday this week, so it's been worth going into town.)
And then yesterday there was a rather urgent need to sort out something for someone who was doing some reconciliation of their VISA statement. Short job, achieved just after lunch again! After this I did some different kind of work, working out how the script of the Children's Opera I began writing over thirty years ago would finish up. It's a job I intended to do this week, but had kept putting off. Took the laptop down to the University Library and got the job done. Made a difference working away from home, obviously!
