Update on the health
March 12th 2009 01:49
Things have been quiet on this front for the last week, because I'm doing a Varsity course (on Research Methods - it relates to the kind of work I do) and so my time has been a little more eaten up than usual.
I'm writing this post just to update things on the prostate front, (if that's not a pun), and partly to keep some kind of record of where things stand at present. I'm feeling very good; not entirely hale and hearty, but getting there. Still get tired, particularly towards the end of the working day, and most days so far haven't actually managed to make it right through the eight hours. However, I'm improving even on that score, and no doubt next week will be more able to work as normal.
Being able to walk normally is wonderful. I can't emphasize how much. The catheter was so inhibiting, I'm constantly rediscovering just how free I am without it. I haven't walked to work yet, but have walked halfway twice.
I still get various pains: the prostate itself sometimes aches a bit, especially after I've been for a pee. At least I'm assuming that's the area that's complaining. My bladder's getting used to drinking lots of water (on top of the normal cups of tea/coffee) and coping, so that I'm not suddenly dashing to the toilet, as I was the first week. There are still occasional emergencies, but so far I haven't actually wet myself!
I decided to stop drinking anything much after tea time, because I was getting up three or four times in the night. Going 'dry' from about six onwards seems to be helping, apart from just being more relaxed about everything.
There are some odd pains in the male member (I'm sure if I use it's proper name some piece of censoring software will rise up and condemn me). I'm assuming that these are in part because of the bruising from wearing a catheter for nearly eleven weeks, as well as the natural bruising that would have gone on in the course of the operation. There's a nasty little stinging pain at the tip sometimes. A friend of mine who went through the same op three or so years ago tells me that because the urethra narrows as it approaches the opening the surgeon has to cut the urethra to get the instrument that shaves the prostate inside. Whether this is always the case or not, I don't know. Certainly it wasn't mentioned to me.
Anyway, if that's why it's stinging at times, no doubt that will heal in due course as well. Usually during the day/night it's okay, but just suddenly there comes a kind of pinching, as though something's got caught. Just have to take care. It's still infinitely less painful than wearing a catheter.
It's now two and a half weeks since the op. I'm already driving again, and in another three and a half weeks should be resuming normal behaviour: lifting, digging the garden (something I do all the time -not!) and cavorting with my wife. That'll be interesting.
