Healthy Pet Food?

April 10th 2008 09:27
A few years ago in the book and music trade – and probably in a number of other retail areas as well – Celtic was all the rage. What started as something that brought value to our lives became nothing more than a retail fad. The Celtic people would have been mortified, I suspect.

Now, of course, we’re in the middle of a Green fad. Green is good, in itself, but when it’s used just to promote everything under the sun, including pet supplies, then the good thing becomes a piece of nonsense.

Take this piece of ‘advertising’ from a site which shall be nameless:
Natural dog food and cat health food are wellness pet food. Request your pet food company or pet food manufacturer supply the best dog food or prescription cat food. Seek natural pet food which is wellness dog food and wellness cat food and use organic pet food for homemade dog food.

Apart from the fact that the writer plainly isn’t very good at English, and doesn’t realise that the use of the word, food, twelve times in fifty words doesn’t make for exciting reading, what exactly is prescription cat food when it’s at home? And natural dog food and cat health food is just a piece of cant.

Natural dog food would be something smelly a dog found outside on the lawn and dragged into the lounge. I can’t imagine what cat health food is except that it’s unlikely to be what these people think. Left to fend for themselves, cats would probably subsist on a diet of small rodents and birds, scraps left on the compost heap and maybe the odd rabbit or two. What they get in tins is probably what’s making most of them die unpleasantly in old age.
