I mentioned in a recent post that my wife and I had gone back to aquajogging. Well, we went for our second time on Saturday morning, and my knee, which I hurt during the run of the play, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, didn't enjoy the water at all.
I have this sense that when I tripped up in the play and went flat on the floor, that my left knee almost seemed to have the sense of having smashed something, but it still works, and apart from niggling at me if I try and make it work too hard (as in aquajogging) or literally telling me to 'get up' when I try and kneel on it without any support, it's certainly not preventing me from walking. However, it's a bit like I've got the wrong kind of cable in there at the moment: some decent CAT5e might do the trick!
When all's said and done, I've been pretty fortunate over the years in terms of not injuring myself, or being injured by anyone else. I haven't even been in hospital since I was in my early twenties (forty odd years ago), and even that was a false alarm.
The only stitches I've ever had were when someone pushed me at school (my fault: I provoked him) and my head landed on an old tap sticking out of the wall. Few stitches and no permanent damage.
I twisted my foot badly when I was a postman once, but apart from it being very inconvenient for a day or so, I kept on walking on it, and have done ever since. (I had just come back to church at the time, and was keen to pray for injuries and such - so that may have helped!)
I thought I'd chopped the top off my little finger once when my wife and I were lifting some heavy piece of furniture, and it dropped on my hand. But no, apart from some minimal bleeding, the finger was fine - which was good for my career as a pianist. The lid of a grand piano came down on my thumb once when I was playing, but apart from turning the thumbnail black and being very painful, nothing long-term went wrong.
The knee that's currently in hurt mode is the same once that I fell on when I was walking to work one morning. It was icy on the roads and footpaths, but I thought I was going okay until my right leg went forward and my left stayed behind, splaying me into an almost splits position. The left knee hit the ground at that point too, and wasn't happy about doing so - and has always been just a bit niggly since. But considering that I've run, jumped and knelt and generally performed the usual routine of human tasks ever since, I guess I've done all right with it.
