Afternoon Nap
December 9th 2009 06:51
A nap in the middle of the afternoon is great for reviving energy.
A nap in the middle of a meeting may have the same effect - but may not be looked upon with favour!
Today, for the first time in my life, I think, I fell asleep in a meeting. I'd been struggling ever since the lunch break to stay awake, and did all the usual sorts of tricks - hiding my head in my hands while leaning on the table, sitting back in my chair with my eyes just a little closed - but nothing really disguised the fact that I was likely to fall asleep any minute.
And finally I succumbed. I had no choice. There's a point in which your brain decides to shut down all unneeded services (such as paying attention to the speaker) and you can't do anything about it. My head didn't crash onto the table or any other spectacular exhibition; I merely managed somehow to sleep while resting my head on my hands, elbows on the table. And it was so good.
I must have been asleep only for a couple of minutes, (maybe a few more), but I woke up feeling alive again, and not longer wanting to sleep at all.
When they give out the party invitations next time we have one of these meetings, I may get excluded. Nah, not really. As we discussed today at one point (when I was awake) none of us are indispensable, but equally some of us are relied on to be there - and in my case, if I'm not there, the room won't get set up, and the cups and coffees and teas won't get put out, and the jug won't get boiled....and so on.
So I think I'll be forgiven the short toddle off in the land of Nod - and anyway, it doesn't appear that I missed anything!
