Older Workers

Today on the MyLot site, I came across a discussion that started like this:
"I'm a 62 year old unemployed school teacher that needs a job to support my 15 year old daughter. When I apply for a school teaching job they will not hire me due to my age. I also worked in advertising for over 20 years. Any suggestions on how to make some money at 62 years old will help."
Boy, do I understand how he feels. No one in the personnel places has ever suggested to me that age is an issue - at least not face to face. I think the issue is there though, as they don't put my name forward for some jobs: supposedly the employers are looking for someone career-minded, or who will stay long-term. Yeah, right.
My wife and kids have hinted at the age thing, though. Perhaps they're more honest, and of course, I'm well aware that even though I feel 50ish, I am actually 61. My grandfather was retired at this age, I think, and my father was dead. So to be still alive at 61 and feeling like working is a bonus, really. It's just a matter of convincing other people that that's the case!
Not everyone is convinced that older people aren't worth employing any more. Check out this site. (It's where the picture comes from - which isn't of me, by the way!)
