Real work, or the lack of it
June 26th 2007 19:52
The only real ‘work’ I’m doing at present is keeping blogs going, and some days I don’t even do much of that. Being in holiday mode, I blog when I’ve got nothing else to do, and I don’t have a lot else to do at present…so you can see that I’m really winding down.
Meanwhile the rest of the world gets on and works. Thank goodness, otherwise I’d be stuck trying to maintain this lifestyle to which I am gradually becoming accustomed.
I’ve even started reading books again – not that I’d stopped entirely, but comparing my book diary (the list of books I’ve read in a particular year) for this year with last year, you’d think I’d decided that reading wasn’t much of a thing to do anymore.
But I’ve got time to sit and enjoy books again – and fall asleep in the middle of reading, if I want. I’m finally catching up with a book I brought with me from NZ – it was one of those books I was determined to read at some point and thought that since it was relatively lightweight it could make the trip with us.
It’s called The Floating Admiral, written by members of The Detection ClubYour text goes here. I’ve written about it in more detail on my other blog. It’s only 76 years old (my edition is only 24 years old) but the writing is as fresh as the day it was published. That’s what I love about books: age cannot wither them, nor custom stale their infinite variety, to paraphrase Mr Shakespeare.
On the other hand, I was in Borders, in Norwich yesterday. Fantastic shop which turned out to be three times as big as I first thought. Fantastic, but overwhelming. So many books! So little time! That’s one of the perils of age: we begin to think we can’t possibly read all the books we’d like to, however tempting it might be to try.
