Abstinence

September 15th 2007 20:01
While we’ve been staying in the hotel in Lichfield, I’ve been reading The Independent newspaper - because the hotel offers it free each day. It’s an interesting paper, similar to The Times, and with heaps of reading. I don’t know that I’d get through a single issue in a week, let alone a day.
Amongst the wealth of reading matter there was an interesting letter in The Independent by someone who worked in drug rehabilitation for a number of years. He stated that the current use of methadone as a way to help addicts isn’t a solution; all it does is shift their dependence.
This person, and a number of others in the know, maintain that abstinence is the only long-term solution, but abstinence is not considered the way to go for many funders of addiction programs. Like abstinence as a solution for teenage sexual behaviour, it’s not considered ‘appropriate’ for people in the 21st century.
Which I suspect has more to do with our lack of discipline in all sorts of areas of life, rather than anything to do with the viability of abstinence.

Honestly, in many ways I think the drug problem is a lot like the teenage pregnancy problem.

Curiosity of the unknown.

The way it's being looked at with these things is strange, some say it can't be helped teens have sex some say it can, some say it should be encouraged while others say it shouldn't.

I think, just like the drug issue, education should be the prime concern. I don't think people are idiots, but people are curious about such mysterious things as drugs and sex.

Kind of reverse psychology but I really think it should be given a shot, integrate real and frank drug and sex education into the system.

Unfortunately, years and years of 'education' in schools hasn't helped a jot. For one thing it's done in a clinical way without any concern for the emotional side kids go through; secondly it fights a losing battle with the real education that goes on outside the classroom in terms of movies, tv, magazines - all of which promote sex outside of a permanent relationship as okay. Standing against that sort of 'education' is the big battle for kids.
