Smoothies - mark two
September 30th 2007 14:28
I wrote about the difficulties of marketing smoothies in a post in August, but there don’t seem to be too many difficulties in making smoothies.
Just came across a post on another blog where they writer gives several good reasons why smoothies are a healthy ‘snack’. Not sure that I’d call them a snack – more like a drink to me (and a good alternative to coffee, that’s for sure).
She lists the following as good reasons to make smoothies (perhaps this is a good basis for the marketing side).
I always associate smoothies with milkshakes. My first experience of having a milkshake lives with me vividly in my memory. My mother took me town on a Friday night (in those days that was the night shops were open late) and got me a milkshake. I couldn’t get near to finishing the thing. It seemed to bloat me up and make me feel quite ill. Even now I have to go steadily with milkshakes. The combination of the cold and the milk (which doesn’t seem to slip down the throat too easily) always makes me think twice about having one.
However, that doesn’t stop me having them. I even had a more than halfway decent one at McDonald’s the other day. Since we’ve been in England, we’ve found that we can get an economically-priced drink at McDonald’s: tea, coffee, milkshakes. We won’t admit it to anyone at home, of course, when we go back. The shame! (Just kidding!!)

They’re an easy way to add more calcium, fibre, antioxidants and vitamins to your diet
You can reduce food wastage by using over-ripe fruit
They’re easy to prepare
They’re low in fat
And they’re a great way to start your day by drinking one for breakfast.
